Checks, invoices, and contracts often ask for the same dollar total twice—once in digits and once spelled out. Typing “twelve thousand three hundred forty-five dollars and sixty-seven cents” by hand invites transposition errors, especially when the integer part crosses thousands boundaries. • Enter the amount using digits only (commas optional). Do not type $ or other currency symbols in the amount field.
• Choose currency for major and minor unit labels (dollars and cents, pounds and pence, euros and cents, etc.). Yen and won use whole units only.
• Pick letter case to match your invoice template or bank form.
• Copy the Answer into your check, receipt, or contract. For US dollars, the check fraction line (e.g. 52/100) appears below when applicable.

More than two decimal places round to the nearest cent before wording—25.118 becomes twenty-five dollars and twelve cents, matching standard money rounding.

How to Convert Dollars and Cents Into Words

Split the amount at the decimal point mentally: the left side is whole dollars, the right side is cents (pad to two digits when you read it aloud).

1. Spell the dollar integer and add dollar or dollars (singular only for exactly one).
2. If cents are not zero, add and, spell the two-digit cent value, and add cent or cents.
3. Omit the cents clause when the amount is a whole dollar value (e.g. 25 → twenty-five dollars).

Many US checks ask for a legal line in words plus a cents fraction over 100 on the same line, for example eighty-eight dollars and 52/100. That fraction form is not the same as spelling out fifty-two cents in the legal amount line—banks want both formats in different places on the slip.
