About Roman Numerals
Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the Late Middle Ages.
Numbers in this system are represented by combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet. The basic symbols are:
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
- D = 500
- M = 1000
Standard Roman Numerals usually only go up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). For numbers 4,000 and larger, a horizontal line (vinculum) was drawn above the symbol to indicate multiplication by 1,000, which is not supported in standard text characters.
