How to Use This Day of the Year Calculator
The calendar year is really a numbered sequence from 1 (January 1) through 365 or 366 (December 31)—but most wall calendars never print that index. Project leads tracking “day 200” compliance windows and finance teams closing books on year-end day counts often resort to adding January through prior months by hand. That is where leap years and 30/31-day months cause off-by-one mistakes.
Pick any date (today loads automatically) and read the ordinal day, how many days remain in that year, weekday, leap-year status, and percent of the year elapsed. For spans between two separate dates, use the Day Counter; for weekday-only checks, use the Day of the Week Calculator.
- Open the page — Today’s day number and days left calculate immediately.
- Change the date to see historical milestones (for example, March 16, 1977 = day 75 in a common year).
- Read days left for year-end planning, OKR pacing, or fiscal countdowns.
- Check leap year when February might add day 366 to the calendar.
How to Calculate Days Left in the Year
Following the manual month-stacking method:
Step 1: Determine whether the year is a leap year (366 days) or a common year (365 days).
Step 2: Find the day number — sum the days in all whole months before the current month, then add the day of the month.
Example: March 13 in a common year → January 31 + February 28 + 13 = 72.
Step 3: Subtract from the year length:
Days Left = Days in Year − Day Number
Using the example: 365 − 72 = 293 days remaining.
The calculator performs the same logic using the browser calendar engine, so leap-century rules stay correct without memorizing divisibility tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is January 1 always day 1?
Yes. Day-of-year numbering starts at 1 on January 1 and ends on December 31 at 365 or 366 depending on the year.
How many days are in a leap year?
366 days. February has 29 days instead of 28. The leap year row in the results table confirms whether the selected year follows that pattern.
What day of the year was March 16, 1977?
Day 75. January 31 + February 28 + 16 = 75 in that non-leap year—a classic hand-calculation check you can run in the date picker above.
Does this include the current day in “days left”?
Days left counts remaining days after the selected date through December 31. On December 31 itself, zero days remain in the year after that date.
