How to Use This Age Difference Calculator
Comparing two ages sounds like subtracting two numbers until someone asks for years, months, and days between birthdays—or until you only know birth years from a genealogy chart. Choose one of three methods: full dates for precision, numeric ages with units, or birth years for a quick calendar-year gap.
- From dates of birth — Most accurate. Enter both birthdays; results show calendar years, months, days, total days, and approximate hours between midnights.
- From ages — When you already know each person’s age in years, months, or days today. The gap is the absolute difference in that unit.

Age Gap Formulas
Dates of birth (calendar-accurate)
Let the earlier birthday be start and the later be end. Borrow months and days the same way as chronological age:
Gap = end date − start date in years, months, days after month/day borrowing.
Total Days = calendar days between start and end
Ages in the same unit
Age Difference = |Age₁ − Age₂|
Birth years only
Year Gap = |Year₁ − Year₂| (approximate; ignores month and day within each year).
Worked example (dates): 1 Jan 1990 vs 30 Jun 1995 → 5 years, 5 months, 29 days and 2,107 total days between the earlier and later birthday.

Which method should I use?
Use dates of birth whenever you have them—they respect variable month lengths and leap years. Use numeric ages when someone tells you “I’m 31 and they’re 24.” Use birth years only when month/day are unknown and an approximate gap is enough.
Is the age gap always positive?
Yes. Every mode reports the absolute difference. The comparison row states which person is older or whether the ages match.

Why do total hours equal total days × 24?
