What is GWA?

GWA, or General Weighted Average, is the standard grading system used by many universities and colleges in the Philippines to assess a student's overall academic performance. Because some subjects are harder or take up more time, they are assigned more "units." The GWA takes these units into account so that major subjects have a heavier weight on your final average than minor subjects.

How to compute GWA in college

To calculate your GWA, you use the weighted average formula:

GWA = Total (Grade × Units) / Total Units

For example, if you take Math (3 units) and get a grade of 1.50, and take PE (2 units) and get a grade of 1.00:

• Math: 1.50 × 3 = 4.50
• PE: 1.00 × 2 = 2.00
• Total sum: 4.50 + 2.00 = 6.50
• Total units: 3 + 2 = 5
• GWA = 6.50 / 5 = 1.30

Grading Systems

Universities in the Philippines use various grading systems, but the process of calculating GWA remains the same regardless of the numbers.

• 1.00 to 5.00 Scale: Commonly used by UP and many state universities, where 1.00 is excellent and 3.00 is the passing mark. 5.00 means failing.
• 4.00 to 1.00 Scale: Commonly used by DLSU, ADMU, and others, where 4.00 is excellent and 1.00 is the passing mark.
• Percentage Scale: Used by some high schools and colleges where grades range from 100% down to 75% as the passing mark.
