How to Use the College GPA Calculator
Keeping track of your Grade Point Average (GPA) is essential for maintaining scholarships, academic standing, and preparing for graduate programs. This calculator helps you determine your semester GPA and your new cumulative GPA.
- Add Current Courses: For each class you are currently taking, enter the number of credits (or units) and the letter grade you expect to earn. The course name is optional and just for your reference.
- Input Previous GPA (Optional): If you want to see how this semester affects your overall standing, enter your prior cumulative GPA and the total number of credits you have completed so far.
- Calculate: Click Calculate GPA to instantly see your semester GPA, semester credits, and new cumulative GPA.
College GPA Formula
In college, your GPA is a weighted average based on the number of credits each course is worth. A 4-credit calculus class impacts your GPA significantly more than a 1-credit PE class.
The Formula:
GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credits
To find the total grade points, multiply the grade point value of each letter grade by the number of credits for that course, and add them all together.
Standard 4.0 Grade Scale
This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale common in most US colleges and universities:
- A+, A: 4.0
- A-: 3.7
- B+: 3.3
- B: 3.0
- B-: 2.7
- C+: 2.3
- C: 2.0
- C-: 1.7
- D+: 1.3
- D: 1.0
- F: 0.0
Note: Some universities may not use plus/minus grading, or may have a different value for an A+ (such as 4.3). Always verify with your official college transcript or registrar.
