How Conception & Intercourse Windows Relate

Conception is the moment an egg is fertilized by a sperm. In terms of timing, this occurs very close to ovulation. Since sperm can survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, intercourse leading to pregnancy can happen days before ovulation itself.

Conception Calculations

  • From Due Date: A full-term pregnancy typically lasts 38 weeks (266 days) from conception. If your due date is known, the conception date is estimated by counting backward 266 days. Formula: $\text{Conception Date} = \text{Due Date} - 266\text{ days}$.
  • From Last Menstrual Period (LMP): If you track your period, ovulation and conception typically happen about 14 days before your next expected period. If you have a standard 28-day cycle, this is 14 days after the first day of your last period. Formula: $\text{Conception Date} = \text{LMP} + (\text{Cycle Length} - 14)\text{ days}$.
