How Calories Burned Are Calculated
Energy expenditure is calculated using Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) values. 1 MET is defined as the energy expended while sitting quietly at rest (approx. $3.5\text{ ml of oxygen per kg of body weight per minute}$).
The MET Calorie Formula
To calculate the calories burned during exercise, we use the following standard equation:
- $$\text{Calories Burned} = \text{MET} \times 3.5 \times \frac{\text{Weight (kg)}}{200} \times \text{Duration (minutes)}$$
- If weight is entered in pounds (lbs), convert to kilograms by multiplying by $0.45359237$.
Disclaimer. MET equations compute general averages. Actual calories burned vary between individuals based on muscle mass, body composition, fitness level, age, gender, and environmental factors.
