What is Body Surface Area (BSA)?
Body Surface Area (BSA) is the measured or calculated surface area of a human body. In clinical medicine, BSA is considered a more accurate indicator of metabolic mass than body weight alone because it is less affected by abnormal adipose tissue.
Standard Clinical Formulas
Multiple equations exist to estimate BSA (using weight $W$ in kg and height $H$ in cm):
- **Mosteller:** $\text{BSA} = \sqrt{\frac{H \times W}{3600}}$
- **DuBois & DuBois:** $\text{BSA} = 0.007184 \times W^{0.425} \times H^{0.725}$
- **Haycock:** $\text{BSA} = 0.024265 \times W^{0.5378} \times H^{0.3964}$
- **Gehan & George:** $\text{BSA} = 0.0235 \times W^{0.51456} \times H^{0.42246}$
- **Boyd:** $\text{BSA} = 0.0003207 \times (W \times 1000)^{0.7285 - 0.0188 \log_{10}(W \times 1000)} \times H^{0.3}$
Disclaimer. BSA calculations are diagnostic approximations. Medication dosages and physiological assessments must always be confirmed by qualified clinical personnel.
