How the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method Works
The U.S. Navy Method uses simple body circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. It is an accessible, cost-effective alternative to DXA scans or hydrostatic weighing.
Circumference Guidelines
To obtain accurate estimations, follow these tape measurement rules:
- **Neck:** Measure just below the larynx, keeping the tape horizontal.
- **Waist:** Measure horizontally around the narrowest part of the torso (or at the navel for men).
- **Hips (Women only):** Measure horizontally around the widest part of the gluteal area.
Navy body fat equations
- **Men (inches):** $\text{BF}\% = 86.010 \times \log_{10}(\text{waist} - \text{neck}) - 70.041 \times \log_{10}(\text{height}) + 36.76$
- **Women (inches):** $\text{BF}\% = 163.205 \times \log_{10}(\text{waist} + \text{hip} - \text{neck}) - 97.684 \times \log_{10}(\text{height}) - 78.387$
Disclaimer. Circumference-based body fat estimations are indirect measurements and contain margins of error (usually 3–4%). They may over- or under-estimate fat percentage in highly muscular individuals or those with non-standard fat distribution.
