Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool used to estimate total body fat and assess weight-related health risks. It is calculated by dividing weight by the square of height.
BMI Categories
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines standard weight classifications based on BMI value:
- **Underweight:** BMI is less than 18.5
- **Normal Weight:** BMI is 18.5 to 24.9
- **Overweight:** BMI is 25.0 to 29.9
- **Obese:** BMI is 30.0 or higher
The Math Behind BMI
Depending on your unit system, BMI uses one of these standard formulas:
- **Metric:** $\text{BMI} = \text{weight (kg)} / [\text{height (m)}]^2$
- **Imperial:** $\text{BMI} = 703 \times \text{weight (lbs)} / [\text{height (inches)}]^2$
