Understanding the New June 2023 US Army Regulation 600-9 Body Fat Standards
Effective June 12, 2023, the U.S. Army transitioned to a **one-site circumference-based tape test** to assess body composition compliance under AR 600-9. The older multi-site tape test involving height, neck, waist, and hips has been replaced by a simplified method.
The One-Site Tape Test Protocol
The new Army body fat tape test is measured as follows:
- **Measurement Site:** A single measurement of the abdominal circumference is taken at the level of the navel (belly button).
- **Rounding Rules:** Weight is rounded to the nearest whole pound. The abdominal circumference average is rounded **down** to the nearest 0.5 inch (or 0.5 cm).
- **Exemptions:** Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), with at least 80 points in each event, are completely exempt from the body fat tape test.
The Mathematical Equations
Body fat percentage ($BF\%$) is calculated using the weight in pounds ($W$) and abdominal circumference in inches ($A$):
- **For Men:** $BF\% = -26.97 - (0.12 \times W) + (1.99 \times A)$
- **For Women:** $BF\% = -9.15 - (0.015 \times W) + (1.27 \times A)$
- The final calculated body fat percentage is rounded down to the nearest whole percent (truncated).
