What is Compound Interest?

**Compound Interest** is the interest calculated on the initial principal as well as the accumulated interest of previous periods. Often described as "interest on interest," compounding causes investments to grow exponentially over time.

How Frequency Affects Growth

The more frequently interest is compounded, the higher the total return will be. For example, daily compounding yields more than monthly compounding, which in turn yields more than annual compounding, given the same nominal annual interest rate.
